Join us bright and early on the morning of 28 August 2018 for a foray into innovations in intravesical therapeutics!
With increasing concern about systemic side effects of treatments for common urologic disorders, it’s time to consider putting the solution where the problem is: right into the bladder. In this 90 minute workshop, a diverse panel of experts in urogynecology, pharmacology, and nursing will explore the past, present, and future of intravesical instillations for the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). In the final 25 minutes, delegates will have the opportunity to hone their best practice skills in catheterization and instillation using a novel delivery system.
Our first speaker, Dr. Rufus Cartwright, MD, will provide an overview of basic anatomy and physiology of the urethra and bladder and how intravesical drug delivery can bypass traditional metabolic pathways to act directly at intended sites of action such as the urothelium and detrusor muscle. Dr. Cartwright is a trainee in gynaecology from the United Kingdom. He has worked as a research fellow for both Linda Cardozo at King’s College London and Vik Khullar at Imperial College London, and serves as an Editor for the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (BJOG) and the International Urogynecology Journal (IUJ).
Professor Mauro Cervigni, MD, a world-renowned expert in robotic surgery, Interstitial Cystitis (IC), and Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS), based at the A. Gemelli University Polyclinic Foundation in Rome will then speak about currently licensed intravesical treatment options for IC. Professor Cervigni has led multiple trials about the short- and long-term effectiveness of hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate versus dimethyl sulfoxide and is Co-Founder and Vice-President of the International Society for the Study of Interstitial Cystitis (ESSIC).
Delegates will then hear from Assistant Professor of Urology Pradeep Tyagi, PhD, of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in the United States. Dr. Tyagi will provide an overview of recent advances in intravesical therapeutics, the state of the science behind intravesical liposome therapy, and highlights of potential future intravesical therapeutics. We will also learn about some novel mechanisms of action as well as challenges faced with intravesical therapeutics.
Lead Urogynaecology Nurse, Angie Rantell, BSc (Hons), of King’s College Hospital will then discuss best practices in catheterization for intravesical therapeutics instillation, covering administration by both patients and healthcare providers. Ms. Rantell was the first Urogynacology Nurse Cystoscopist in the UK and is an internationally renowned teacher of ambulatory doctors and nurses. She will provide troubleshooting and tips and tricks for teaching patients to self-manage catheterization.
Finally, delegates will have the opportunity to practice instillation with sample catheters around ten tables at the back of the room, with speakers and the workshop chair circulating to assist delegates, also providing a smaller, less formal setting for questions and answers.
