With the publication of the new open access article by Donna Bliss, ICS is keen to share some background on the paper - Standard Questions for a Bowel Diary to Assess Fecal Incontinence in Adults: A Consensus Project of the International Continence Society.
The need for the project was established back in 2018 as it was recognised that pre-existing literature on the topic of bowel diaries was very limited.
Led by Prof. Donna Bliss, an interdisciplinary team of ICS members set out with the objective to develop a standard bowel diary for collecting information from adult patients for assessing faecal incontinence.
Preliminary work involved collecting bowel diaries from various countries for analysis and votes were then cast during a workshop across two ICS annual meetings (2018 in Philadelphia & 2019 in Sweden). Robust discussions ensued within the ICS workshops, generating input and ideas around the principles and delegate preferences for the standard bowel diary. Consensus was ultimately reached using a modified Delphi method.
