We have pleasure in announcing the following prizes awarded at ICS 2009. The number and quality of abstract submissions for this meeting was exceptional. It was a challenge for the ICS Scientific Committee members and Chairs of the Sessions to select the winners. The “Best Abstract” Awards were the highest scoring Clinical or Basic Science abstracts during the scientific review. The “Best Presentation” Awards were the Clinical and Basic Science presentations that were given the highest score during the meeting by the session chairs.
The best Basic Science Abstract submitted as a poster came from the Wake Forest University in the USA: “Establishing a rodent model for characterisation of natural in vivo bladder regeneration” by Burmeister D, Aboushwareb T, Andersson K and Christ G.
The best Basic Science Presentation was a podium session from Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Centre (USA) and Rush University Medical Centre, USA: “Urethral Neuromuscular Injury Following Simulated Childbirth Injury in a Rat Model” by Kong W, Lin D, Kinley B, Kerns J and Damaser M.
This year the two highest scoring clinical papers were within two decimal places of each other after being reviewed by more than 5 reviewers and the decision was therefore made to split the prize rather than choose a single winner. Sharing the joint Best Clinical Abstract award were “Abnormal brain responses to bladder filling in young women with urinary retention and effect of sacral neuromodulation” by Kavia R, DasGupta R, Critchley H, Fowler C and Griffiths D from London (UK), Sussex (UK) and Pittsburgh (USA) and “Brain activity measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is related to patient reports and clinical severity of urge urinary incontinence” by Tadic S, Griffiths D, Schaefer W, Cheng C, Resnick N from Pittsburgh (USA).
The Best Clinical Presentation was an investigator initiated clinical trial from Canada:
“Efficacy of botulinum toxin-A injection for neurogenic detrusor overactivity and urinary incontinence – a randomised double-blind trial” by Herschorn S, Gajewski J, Ethans K, Corcos J, Carlson K, Bailly G, Bard R, Valiquette L, Baverstock R, Radomski S and Carr L.
There were two Industry Sponsored Awards (Ferring), the winners of which were selected by the ICS Scientific Committee. The first award was for Innovative Research Presented on Nocturnal Voiding Problems. The winning title was “The epidemiology of nocturnal polyuria (incidence and prevalence): a longitudinal community based study in men between 50 and 78 years of age” by Van Doorn B, Blanker M and Bosch R from Utrecht and Groningen, the Netherlands.
The second, the New Investigator” award for those new to our field, was given to authors from Montreal and Sherbrooke (Canada): Elliott V, Dumoulin C, Martin C, Morin M, Lemieux M, Bourbonnais D for “Physical Therapy for Persistent Postpartum Stress Urinary Incontinence: a Seven Year Follow-up Study”.
